Yes, and if the engine is running you're non seeing the battery voltage. You're seeing the output voltage of the alternator.

13.viii was the start number that came to mind when I saw the thread title.

12.75 volts with the car off.

Then after starting and the alternator is charging the battery, the bombardment voltage will go up to 13 or fourteen volts.

12.7 VDC is considered fully charged/appropriate surface accuse (every bit in engine off, battery idle), according to my war machine technical data. Which is interesting because i know it used to be 12.4 VDC.

Anything less than 12.vii you lot're supposed to charge using a bombardment charger., also out of my armed forces technical information.

Power is Amps x voltage ;and then measurement needs to exist under load.

State of Accuse

Here are no-load typical voltages vs state of charge

(figured at ten.5 volts = fully discharged, and 77 degrees F). Voltages are for a 12 volt bombardment system. For 24 volt systems multiply past 2, for 48 volt system, multiply by 4. VPC is the volts per individual cell - if you measure out more than a .2 volt difference betwixt each jail cell, yous need to equalize, or your batteries are going bad, or they may exist sulfated. These voltages are for batteries that have been at balance for iii hours or more. Batteries that are beingness charged volition be higher - the voltages while under charge volition not tell yous anything, you have to permit the battery sit for a while. For longest life, batteries should stay in the dark-green zone. Occasional dips into the yellowish are not harmful, but continual discharges to those levels will shorten battery life considerably. Information technology is important to realize that voltage measurements are only approximate. The best conclusion is to measure the specific gravity, but in many batteries this is difficult or impossible. Note the large voltage drib in the last ten%.

State of Charge 12 Volt battery Volts per Cell
100% 12.seven 2.12
xc% 12.5 ii.08
lxxx% 12.42 two.07
70% 12.32 ii.05
sixty% 12.20 2.03
50% 12.06 ii.01
40% xi.9 i.98
xxx% 11.75 1.96
20% xi.58 1.93
ten% eleven.31 ane.89
0 x.five one.75

Why 10.5 Volts?

Throughout this FAQ, we take stated that a battery is considered dead at 10.5 volts. The answer is related to the internal chemistry of batteries - at around 10.5 volts, the specific gravity of the acrid in the battery gets and so low that there is very lilliputian left that can do. In a dead battery, the specific gravity can autumn below ane.one. Some actual testing was done recently on a battery by one of our solar forum posters, and these are his results:

I but tested a 225 ahr deep cycle bombardment that is in skilful working society..
I put a load on it 30a for 4 hrs information technology dropped its voltage to eleven.2
I then allow it cool downwards for 2 hrs

then put the load back on once more in 1hr 42 mins it dropped to ten.3v
35 mins under 30a load 9.1v (273w)
10 mins later max output electric current 11.6a 8.5v (98.6w)
5 mins later on max output current 5.2 amps seven.9v (41w)
three mins later vii.6v and ii.3a (17.5w)

This shows after information technology gets below x.iii 5 you only have 35 mins of anything useful available from the battery.

bombardment is now dead and about likely will not fully recover

I would take a expect at your starter. Pull it apart and clean and regrease the gears within. Accept a look the condition of the brushes and commutator. Have some 2000 dust to it and render it to shinny copper.

Unless your starter is cheap. Mine was cranking slower in the common cold and these steps helped. My starter was $300 though so I tried a lilliputian maintenance first.

Howdy , battery temperature plays a large role here . A common cold lead acid battery volition not turn the engine over a fast as a battery that would be at say room temperature . too dont forget the paracitic drain on the poor battery with things like the radio retention and clock plus other things

what voltage do you need to recharge the battery? to recharge information technology you simply drive on highway for 25 min right? non local roads? final 1.5 months I didn't drive much, mayhap once so I gonna check the voltage and bombardment is 3 years one-time now. Usually I drive near in one case, twice a week.

question for garage door 9v bombardment, can you as well check the five and replace it so you won't become stuck exterior the firm? what voltage should you lot supercede those batteries? thanks for the help

to maintain the car battery you merely wipe away grit dirt brand sure no corrosion, and put wd40 on the terminals is that correct? (so far no corrosion, it's all good)
